Chapter Twenty-Two

There was a knock at the door, and Reg and Vivian both looked toward it.

“Not again,” Reg groaned. But the door was not opened by Sarah. Whoever had knocked was waiting for a response. “Sorry,” Reg advised. “If this keeps up, I’m going to need a ‘do not disturb’ light outside my door, like at a radio station or psychiatrist’s office.”

Vivian leaned back and waited to see who was interrupting them this time. Reg heard Starlight jump to the floor, and he wandered out with an inquiring meow, headed toward the door to see who it was.

Reg eyed him to make sure he wasn’t going to attempt escape. He’d only done it once before, but she didn’t want him running out into the night. Anything could happen to him out there. He could get hit by a car or eaten by an alligator. Vivian’s bad luck could attach to him and he could have a house dropped on him.

She opened the door and saw a tall, pale teen girl standing on her doorstep, arms folded across her chest while she waited impatiently. A short boy stood behind her, his brown curly hair and apple cheeks making him look about ten years old. But Reg knew them both, and neither was what they seemed. Calliopia was a fairy. Adolescent, but probably years older than Reg. And Ruan, for all of his prepubescent looks, was a full-grown pixie. Both had caused her considerable trouble in the past, but she couldn’t help feeling a little responsible for them. What trouble were they in this time? They rarely came over for just a casual visit.

“Hi. What’s up?”

“We saw Reg Rawlins’ light was still on,” Calliopia observed. “You are not sleeping.”

“No. What are you doing out? How are you feeling?”

Calliopia was still recovering from a grave knife wound and wasn’t yet up to traveling very far at a time. She put her hand on the doorframe and peered around Reg. “A guest?”

“Yes. I’m working. If you don’t need anything, maybe we could talk tomorrow.”

Starlight was creeping closer, his nose moving as he smelled the air. While fairies and pixies did not like cats, Ruan had come to appreciate Starlight’s company and had taken to bringing him treats of spiders and other gross things Reg didn’t want to know about. This time, though, he didn’t take anything out of his pockets.

“We go soon,” he informed Reg. “Will not be here much longer.”

“Will you be here tomorrow?”

He exchanged a long look with Calliopia. “We know not.”

Reg hesitated. She didn’t want to interrupt another session with Vivian, but they weren’t getting very far in unwinding the mystery behind Vivian’s accidents, and Reg didn’t want to send Calliopia and Ruan away with the possibility that she might never see them again. She was connected to Calliopia and wanted to know what was happening in her life. She hoped to be able to keep Calliopia out of trouble, so she didn’t get hurt again.

“Well, come in, I guess. No tricks…”

Ruan shook his head.
